Abstract

Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a common medical problem worldwide with very important socioeconomic impact including major effects on quality of life. The basic pathophysiology of GERD is the result of significant backflow of acidic gastric juices into the esophagus that lead to mucosal injury or symptoms. Evaluation of GERD symptoms requires a careful history and physical examination to exclude underlying esophageal, cardiac, or systemic disease. GERD symptoms will often respond to acid suppression medications. Endoscopic and surgical antireflux treatments are effective in select patients for whom medical therapy is insufficient.
