Abstract

Infectious risks for healthcare workers include bloodborne pathogens, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, respiratory viruses, and exotic laboratory-associated pathogens. Prevention strategies include the development and use of behavioral, engineering and work practice controls, adherence to isolation guidelines and immunization. Effective infection control education and occupational health programmes for immunization, post-exposure prophylaxis and treatment are also essential.
