Abstract

An enhanced icosahedral short-range order with undercooling in Ti-Zr-Ni liquids that form icosahedral quasicrystals was observed. This verified Frank's hypothesis that the origin of the barrier to nucleation of crystallographic phases is the formation of local icosahedral order in the liquid.
