Abstract
With its roots in an inequitable economic system, homelessness disproportionately affects minority populations and women, and is perpetuated by social injustice and oppression. The often politicized issues of mental illness and substance abuse further complicate it. Group workers have long recognized the challenges of working with this population. For approximately two decades, the group work literature has provided myriad examples of programs developed for and provided to homeless people. Some of the most innovative and creative applications in group practice have developed in response to meeting the needs of people who are homeless.
