Abstract
Two thermally labile, zwitterionic ornithine-containing lipids isolated as a mixture from Thiobacillus thiooxidans have been analyzed by using fast atom bombardment (FAB) for vaporization and mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (MS/MS) for analysis. Each lipid component yielded a gas-phase protonated molecule whose compositions were determined to be C40H77N2O6 and C39H7SN2O6. Collision Induced decomposition (CID) spectra of the lower molecular weight homologue obtained in an MS/MS mode revealed that part of the molecule which has one less methylene group. The molecular mass assignments of the constituents were verified by a study of the (M − H) negative Ions. CID spectra of these negative ions gave new structural Information which was complementary to that from the CID spectra of the positive ions.
