Abstract
The high incidence of hip fracture can be attributed to two problems that affect most older persons: osteoporosis and the tendency to fall. An estimated 1.3 million osteoporosis-related fractures - principally of the hip, spine, and wrist - occur annually in the United States. A multifaceted approach to prevention of these injuries, involving both short- and long-range measures, is discussed.
