Abstract

This chapter summarizes the most clinically relevant and effective approaches to experimental hydrocephalus, emphasizes recent findings on the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of hydrocephalus, and identifies promising areas of research. Studies in experimental hydrocephalus are critical to understanding the pathophysiology of this disorder, which is complex and multifactorial. Many in vivo models of congenital and acquired hydrocephalus have been developed over the past 50 years, and a wide variety of experimental models are available for comprehensive, controlled studies. These have renewed the momentum for meaningful translational research that will improve treatment for all forms of hydrocephalus.
