Abstract

The biosynthetic pathways leading to the benzophenanthridine alkaloid, sanguinarine, and the indole alkaloids, ajmalicine and ajmaline, have been solved at the level of the individual enzymes involved. The cDNA for two of the key enzymes has been cloned and the enzymes subsequently actively expressed in heterologous organisms.
