Abstract
Purpose of Review: The field of glaucoma has had many innovations come to market in the surgical realm. Over the last decade minimally invasive glaucoma surgery has evolved and allowed for the development of new surgical devices, laser therapy and sustained release drug-delivery platforms. This review primarily focuses on new emerging technology that is in development. Recent Findings: A recent paradigm shift has occurred in the treatment of glaucoma that is starting to change the landscape of glaucoma therapy. This “interventional glaucoma” mindset is based on the premise of intervening in glaucoma treatment earlier in the disease process with either laser, sustained delivery devices that elute the medications in the eye or minimally invasive glaucoma surgery primarily targeting the drainage system, or angle, of the eye. Over the last decade, many innovations have therefore been developed to meet the demand for this new mindset of glaucoma therapy. Summary: This review describes some of the emerging technologies that are on the horizon for the treatment of glaucoma. These technologies include laser therapy, angle and subconjunctival devices, modernized versions of traditional glaucoma tubes and drug-eluting devices.
