N2 - This article presents an updated review on theory, research, and practical issues related to the IBI (input-based incremental) method of vocabulary instruction, which focuses on the presentation of target words in the input and the incremental (and complete) development of various aspects of lexical knowledge. The article is divided into five main parts. After the introduction, the second part addresses theory and research, emphasizing how the IBI approach is connected to lexical input processing and to studies on (a) different ways of presenting target words and (b) different tasks that can be assigned when working with vocabulary. It has been demonstrated, for example, that the presence of different talkers, speaking styles, and speaking rates when presenting target words produces positive effects on learning new words (Barcroft and Sommers 2005; Sommers and Barcroft 2007). The third part focuses on how to implement the IBI method in consideration of ten principles of effective vocabulary instruction and a 7-item checklist for developing IBI lessons. The fourth part focuses on new perspectives and most recent research related to the IBI approach. Finally, the fifth part presents two IBI lessons designed for teaching vocabulary in Spanish at two distinct levels of proficiency.
