Abstract

Left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation has become standard therapy for patients with end-stage heart failure, either as a bridge-to-transplant or destination therapy. For patients presenting in acute cardiogenic shock, acute mechanical circulatory support (AMCS), including ECMO, is a means to stabilize, optimize, and assess a patient’s candidacy for LVAD implantation. In this chapter, we review indications, selection, techniques and outcomes for ECMO therapy as a bridge to LVAD implantation.
