Abstract

This chapter focuses on the evidence-based prevention of eating disorders (EDs). EDs are common and serious behavioral health disorders associated with high morbidity and mortality, marked impairment, and poor quality of life. Significant strides have been made in identifying risk factors for EDs and developing and evaluating effective preventive interventions. The definition of, and diagnostic criteria for, EDs are presented, followed by a discussion of risks factors for EDs, the nature and effectiveness of the most widely studied approaches to risk factor reduction, and, finally, a description of a stepped-care model for integrating ED prevention into practice. If widely applied, this or related strategies could have a major impact on reducing the onset of EDs.
