Abstract

The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) is the latest version of this comprehensive taxonomy of mental disorders. Used primarily by clinicians, but also researchers, educators, and students, DSM-5 lists all mental disorders, their defining characteristics, and their associated features. In the latest edition, the DSM included changes in the diagnostic criteria for several disorders, removed some disorders altogether or combined them with others, and dropped its multiaxial reporting structure. Several of these changes are relevant to the psychiatric issues faced by older adults, most notably changes in the framework for diagnosing cognitive disorders.
