The authors acknowledge other members of the Functional Assessment Team who contributed to this project: Jane Bear-Lehman, Columbia University; Marie Gardner, Virginia Commonwealth University; Elizabeth Gaudino, American Institutes for Research; Beth Gilson, Virginia Commonwealth University; Pamela Hall, American Institutes for Research; Manny Halpern, New York University; Ken Harwood, Columbia University; John Kregel, Virginia Commonwealth University; Kim MacDonald-Wilson, Boston University; Fred Mael, American Institutes for Research; Anthony Margherita, Washington University; Scott Oppler, American Institutes for Research; Sally Rogers, Boston University; and Ali Sheikhzadeh, New York University. The study presented here was supported in part by contract No. 600-97-32018 from the Social Security Administration to the American Institutes for Research, Washington Research Center, Washington DC. Boston University, Washington University St. Louis, New York University, and Virginia Commonwealth University served as subcontractors.
Funding Information:
Step 2 of the Redesign Project was initiated by the Social Security Administration through award of a contract to the American Institutes for Research (AIR) in September 1997. Called the Disability Methodology Redesign Project, its purpose was to integrate prior research and to develop prototype disability determination systems. Among other tasks, the compilation of functional assessment measures in a manner that lends itself to development of a prototype system was necessary. In order to accomplish this, it was necessary to identify and evaluate the best measures available that focus on assessment of work disability. The information would be collected in a database that could be interrogated by members of the Project team to develop prototype systems. An earlier study by Virginia Commonwealth University (4) had compiled information on tests and measures used in disability determination that was useful but not sufficient to this purpose. The current study was to build on this, especially with regard to usability of the information.

N2 - The development of the Functional Assessment Measures Database is described. The database provides a method to organize and search for measures that are used to assess the functional abilities of people with medical impairments to determine work disability. The project identified 4,200 different measures that are used in the functional assessment of persons with disability across the life span, 812 of which are used to evaluate adults in terms of work disability. The database has 3,033 scales that are found in 633 measures. In the database, each measure is described and is linked to at least one functional assessment construct. The use of the database in the Social Security Administration Redesign Project is described. Other possible uses for the database are presented.
