Recent development of high-field wide-bore magnets for spin-imaging applications has made feasible the observation of nuclear spins of low sensitivity. We propose the in vivo use of deuterium, specifically D2O, as an exogeneous magnetic resonance nuclear spin label of clinically significant potential. The combination of an efficient quadrupole relaxation mechanism, low acute toxicity and ready commercial availability of D2O for in situ enrichment will provide sufficient sensitivity for magnetic resonance imaging.
