Abstract

Empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs) are used to analyze a 14-year record of tropical tropospheric ozone columns (TTOCs) determined from satellite measurements. The first EOF explains 54% of TTOC variance and represents biomass burning in Africa and South America. The second EOF explains 20% of the variance and has a distinct lightning signature.
