Abstract

A novel system for the simultaneous external treatment of cancer patients by heat and radiation, is described. The scanning ultrasound reflector - linear array system (SURLAS) utilizes a scanning reflector to direct ultrasound waves generated by the linear array towards the target volume. Design optimization was performed and numerical simulation results of hyperthermia treatments using the SURLAS are presented. The simulations employ three-dimensional, steady state acoustic and bio-heat transfer models.
