Abstract
A design for assembly expert system that makes suggestions during the design synthesis phase is described. If the designer follows these suggestions while creating the design, a better design for automatic assembly will result. The suggestive mode of operation is achieved with a commercially available expert system package using 'if-then' rules. The knowledge embodied in this skeletal version of the system is that of the Boothroyd Design for Automatic Assembly Charts.
