Abstract

The development and subsequent ready accessibility of an annotated, high-quality human biospecimen resource is essential for the validation of liquid biopsy biomarkers and technology platforms. In this chapter, we outline the critical components for creating a high-quality biospecimen resource including considerations for collection and minimizing pre-analytical variability, biospecimen processing, storage strategies, data annotation, and regulatory and administrative oversight. Additionally, reference is given to existing biospecimen resources that may be suitable for liquid biopsy research, when establishing such a resource de novo is impractical.
