Abstract

We present selected results of the March 2001 week-long simultaneous monitoring of the blazar Mkn 421 at 2-60 keV X-rays (with Rossi XTE) and TeV γ-rays (with Whipple and HEGRA). The source shows strong variations in both bands, which are highly correlated, in phase and amplitude. The high degree of correlation lends further support to the standard model in which a unique electrons population produces the X-rays by synchrotron radiation and the γ-ray component by inverse Compton scattering. However, the detailed features of the correlated variability set severe constraints on the characteristics of electron spectrum variations, and on the source physical parameters.
