Abstract

A method to automate the design of functional surfaces of injection-molded product housings is described. In the context of this work, functional surfaces are the interior detail surfaces that serve to mount components and provide strength and rigidity. The method is based upon a simple technique in which an offset of the exterior aesthetic surface is bridged with allowable mounting areas of components within the housing. Given a set of spatially located components and an external enclosing aesthetic surface, a computer implementation of the method constructs suitable, moldable, functional surfaces for the components. The method does not depend upon predefined features and is very general. Several examples with computer output are provided.
