Abstract
It is customary to measure environmental contamination with 2,3,7,8 TCDD by the levels found in soil or soot after an incident. Recent studies have found that bioavailability of 2,3,7,8 TCDD varies considerably presumably due to different properties of the matrix to which the dioxin is bound. Therefore, measurement of dioxin levels in human tissues becomes a more useful index to evaluate bioavailability and hence potentially human toxicity, which is the ultimate concern. In addition, measurement of human tissue provides an indirect measure of persistence of dioxin in the environment including the food chain.
