Abstract

Persistent chest discomfort and unwarranted fear of myocardial infarction or cardiac arrest are common among patients with angiographically normal coronary arteries or nonobstructive atherosclerotic plaques. Psychiatric disorders, particularly panic disorder and major depression, are prevalent in this group. Recognition and treatment of these psychiatric disorders can reduce the emotional distress, functional disability, and excess utilization of medical services associated with chest pain not caused by coronary artery disease.
