Abstract

In many relationships, there comes a time when the nature of what partners do for one another changes. With aging, this change often occurs when one partner develops new limitations or needs. As a result, the nature of support shifts, and the couple enters a new phase in its history. In this article, the authors discuss caregiving couples, couples in which there has been a chance in the balance of responsibilities and in the roles that people play, such that one of the partners is providing a new and greater level of support.
