Abstract

Key Points: Research experiences can be beneficial for trainees and practicing physicians at all stages of their professional development. Individuals seeking a research experience can obtain funding support from medical societies, federal and private grants, and from residency training programs. The Medical Scientist Training Program is a combined degree M.D./Ph.D. program designed to fund and train physician-scientists. These physician-scientists are highly sought-after in academia, because they can fulfill roles in many professional areas, including basic science research, clinical research, teaching, and clinical medicine.
