Abstract
The Davis Rotating Universal Multi-stage (DRUM) sampler is an eight stage Lundgren-type rotating drum cascade impactor utilizing Mercer-style single round jets and two low-pressure stages. Calibrations studies were performed on selected stages utilizing fluorescent monodisperse aerosols of polystyrene latex to evaluate computed cutoff sizes for the stages and measure potential wall losses during extended operation. The DRUM sampler is particularly useful for sampling of environmental aerosols over extended periods for monitoring of size-related chemical properties of the airborne particles. A wall loss study was conducted using polydisperse aerosols of ammonium fluorescein generated by nebulization with a Lovelace nebulizer, dried with a diffusion drier, and reduced to Boltzmann equilibrium with a Kr-85 discharger. The results show wall losses to be less than 4% of the sample.
