    Abstract

In September 1982, with Dreamgirls approaching the start of its second year on Broadway, director and choreographer Michael Bennett issued a casting call for ‘Equity and non-Equity black performers’ that included specific instructions as to skills and style. We are looking for attractive musical performers who are between the ages of 18 and 32 who sing, dance and act well. Women must be 5'4" to 5'8" and must move well. Men must be 5'8" to 6'1" and must dance well. Be prepared with two pieces of contemporary music (rhythm and blues, rock or pop). One should be a driving up-tempo number. The second should be an emotional ballad or love song showing your style and range. Do NOT sing jazz or theatre songs… Come looking your best.
