Abstract
Basketball is played throughout the world and is one of the most popular youth sports in the United States and internationally. Basketball requires acceleration and deceleration, agility, particularly repetitive squatting, jumping, and landing which leads to predictable injury patterns. Injuries most commonly occur in the lower extremity followed by the upper extremity, head, and trunk. The most common injury types are contusion, strain/sprain, fracture/dislocation, laceration, and concussion, respectively. Male basketball players have the highest risk of sudden cardiac death among all athletes. Treatment of such injuries mirrors the management of athletes who play other sports. Injury prevention programs, particularly neuromuscular training programs, have decreased the rate of common lower extremity injuries in basketball athletes.
