Abstract

Total body irradiation with megavoltage photon beams requires basic dosimetric data which have to be measured directly or derived from the standard data. This paper describes physical aspects of the technique involving 10 MV x-rays and bilateral opposing fields, and pays special attention to calibration, dose calculation and tissue compensation. Also discussed is a method for constructing individualized compensators for specific body regions, including the lungs. Phantom* measurements indicate that dose uniformity of ±5% can be achieved with this technique.
