Abstract

On November 9 and 10, 1991, a group of somatosensory and developmental neurobiologists met in New Orleans, Louisiana, to deliberate over recent findings pertaining to the somatosensory system-in particular, those portions devoted to processing of inputs from digitized receptor organs, such as the whiskers and fingers. The focus of the fourth annual Barrels Symposium (Barrels IV) was on signal transmission within the barrel cortex, peripheral injury-induced reorganization in the adult somatosensory cortex, the temporal sequence of developmental events contributing to whisker-related pattern formation, and potential roles for cytotactin in developing neural systems.
