Abstract
The methods for automatic derivation of qualitative descriptions are investigated. A method for qualitative representation of complex objects, systematic search and retrieval of measurements, and the discovery of knowledge are developed based on the study of collections of such qualitative descriptions. These techniques are a combination of fuzzy logic and evolutionary computational methods that can solve optimization problems associated with qualitative description. In addition, the results of the application of these methods to the description of financial time series are presented.
