Abstract
Various approaches to type design of the hand engineered letters are discussed. The strategy of the sign's engineer and the ideas behind the those forms are analyzed. The visual decisions are found to be based on the persona of an engineer, rather than a designer. The challenges to balance geometry and quirkiness, attributes that were applied unevenly to the individual characters are also elaborated.
