Abstract
The field of artificial intelligence and image analysis has been revolutionized by advances in deep learning. In this chapter, we describe the how deep learning developed and provide details on the mechanics of deep learning. Applications for retinal image analysis using deep learning techniques are reviewed along with current barriers to deployment of AI systems for clinical care. Finally, regulatory and ethical considerations are discussed as AI systems for image analysis are poised to transform the practice of medicine.
