Abstract
The purpose of this article is to provide a tutorial on statistical learning and its role in learning to spell, and discuss the implications of this research for educators. Even though children use their statistical learning skills from an early age to learn about the visual characteristics of written words and the relations between visual and linguistic units, structured instruction remains important.
