Abstract

Two model reduction methods - Schur method and model reduction in modal coordinates are employed in this paper for application to robust control of the dynamics of a flexible High Speed Civil Transport (HSCT) aircraft. These methods are employed to reduce a 40th-order model to two 8th- order models. These 8th-order models are employed to design two robust controllers in the presence of unstructured and parametric uncertainties. The performance of these controllers based on the reduced-order models is evaluated by comparing them with the controller based on the full-order model. It is shown that the model reduction in modal coordinates using the H norm gives the best results in controlling the dynamics of a flexible aircraft. The effects of the actuator nonlinearities are also investigated.
