Abstract
Ventilators are a key tool in the fight against infectious diseases that impair respiration. The COVID-19 pandemic has been a devastating health crisis, exposing a need for effective ventilation strategies that look beyond the limited and very expensive commercial ventilators available to a select few wealthy nations. This chapter explains the types of modern ventilation methods and the regulations and standards that have come to define them after well over 100 years of international innovation, in hopes that it encourages the reader to continue advancing this important technology with full awareness of the process one must follow to produce a clinically useful ventilator.
