note = "Funding Information: The AGA has been striving to increase support for research, both basic and clinical, by its efforts in advising the National Institutes of Health, especially the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, and by providing information for the Veterans Administration research program. It has made a major effort to establish a presence on Capitol Hill by a series of position papers that, I think, are consistent with strong support for realistic and achievable goals vis-a-vis current congressional policies regarding practice issues affecting the gastroenterologist. In the sphere of hospital administration, at the request of the Physician Payment Review Commission the AGA is initiating a study, along with the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, of the utilization of endoscopy in both hospital patients and outpatients. In the public sphere the AGA is forming a research foundation, which will interact with industry and business. At the same time, it is establishing model programs with lay organizations such as Research America! in order to stimulate the public{\textquoteright}s awareness of and support for research in gastroenterology.",
