Abstract
Memory B cells respond to heterologous antigens either by molding new specificities through secondary germinal centers or by selecting preexisting clones without further affinity maturation. Wong et al. show that for flavivirus challenges, secondary germinal centers minimally contribute to recall responses. Instead, preexisting cross-reactive clones are selected from a diverse memory compartment.
