N2 - Infective endocarditis (IE), an infection of the endocardial lining of the heart, accounts for about 1 in 1,000 admissions to hospital. Because IE often occurs in patients with multiple co-morbid illnesses and those who have undergone recent invasive procedures, it is commonly diagnosed and treated in the intensive care unit (ICU) [1, 2]. IE is the cause of 0.8-3.0% of admissions to ICUs, with mortality exceeding 50% in some reported series of ICU patients [3, 4].
