Abstract

The paper proposes two protocol independent traffic policing algorithms, the loose generic bucket policer (LGBP) and the strict generic bucket policer (SGBP), both of which are based on the well known generic cell rate algorithm (GCRA). Both LGBP and SGBP can be configured to support GCRA. We also prove that LGBP can be configured as a loose token bucket policer and SGBP can be configured as a strict token bucket policer. Furthermore, a new design for a protocol independent traffic shaper is proposed. Using the LGBP and SGBP algorithms to update time stamps, the traffic shaper can guarantee conformance of flows to the individual traffic profile.
