N1 - Funding Information: I leave with mixed emotions, but I am comforted by knowing that Prof Rajesh Thakker, an outstanding clinician, scientist, colleague, and friend, will be taking over the helm of the journal. Prof Thakker is best positioned to lead the journal into a new phase because of his broad‐based and deep knowledge of the field, from bench science to the clinic, and his experience in scientific publishing. It is no secret that there are challenges ahead. The increased competition by an expanding number of open‐access journals, particularly in basic and translational sciences, has eroded submission volume, though it has not affected the quality of content. More importantly, the move by major funding agencies toward open‐access publication of publicly funded research, recently recommended in a memorandum by the US Office of Technology and Science Policy, poses perhaps the greatest challenge to professional society–owned journals. Since its founding, has served not only as a platform for publishing research data but also as a revenue stream for ASBMR that reinvests all profits from publications to further its mission and support its members. It is likely that very different business approaches above and beyond the “classic” subscription model will be required in the future to preserve 's scope and scientific stature, while keeping the operations financially sustainable. Uncertain times require creativity and innovation, and I am fully confident that the Society's leadership will find appropriate solutions to continue the journal's success into the future. Undoubtedly, any solutions to this challenge will require increasing submissions substantially. This is where our authors and ASBMR members can and will make a difference, by choosing and as the primary vehicles for publicizing their research findings. JBMR JBMR JBMR JBMR JBMR JBMR JBMR Plus
