Personal profile

Research interests

My health services research has two focus areas:

1. Improving the efficiency of health care delivery for critically-ill patients through the study of hospital- and health system-level outcome variations and the effect of changes made at the organizational level. I primarily utilize large clinical databases. My current research is focused on understanding the effects of inter-hospital transfer as a key system feature for improved care of the critically-ill sepsis patient.

2. Improving patient safety in the critical care setting: through the study of how variations in care delivery processes in acute hospital care settings affect patient outcomes, using epidemiological and quality control methodologies. Specific areas of research interest include readmissions to intensive care, discharge delay from intensive care, and diurnal/"weekend" effects on patient outcomes.
