Personal profile

Research interests

My research interest is medical parasitology, especially helminthology. This includes applied field research in endemic countries as well as basic research on diagnosis, genomics and biochemistry of parasitic worms. My research focused on filarial parasites, their Wolbachia endosymbiont and on the effect of mass drug administration to eliminate lymphatic filariasis an filariae and soil transmitted helminths.

Mentoring

I have supervised, mentored and collaborated with culturally diverse students and scientists both in the laboratory in Europe and the US as well as in the field in Africa and South-East Asia. Over the years I have learned a lot from my collaborators and think that a diverse background of researchers benefits the scientific progress the most.
