    Research interests

    Dr. Szoko's research focuses on identifying protective factors for adolescent well-being. Much of his work has centered on systems-involved youth, as well as design, implementation, and evaluation of community-based youth development programs. He has expertise in community-based participatory research, geographic information systems (GIS), social network analysis, qualitative approaches, and advanced epidemiologic methods. He has led multiple projects using various participatory methods (e.g., concept mapping, photovoice, group model building). He is currently interested in understanding the intersections of violence, substance use, and other adolescent risk behaviors and aims to center youth and community strengths in his scholarship.

    Medical conditions affecting adolescents, including eating disorders, sexually transmitted diseases and reproductive health; mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, substance use, and PTSD
