My research focuses on the interaction of genetic and environmental factors in common disease development, especially for asthma. I have been working on specific risk population groups and different study design to identify the genetic architecture of asthma. Meanwhile, I have integrated environmental exposure into asthma genetic study in the hope of advancing our understanding of the disease etiology and improving asthma prevention and treatment.
I believe diversity and inclusion are the key to achieving excellence and self-esteem in all our endeavors. As a Chinese immigrant and through my experiences as a mentee, mentor, and female principal investigator, I have become appreciative of people from different cultural backgrounds, learning approaches, communication styles, and ways of demonstrating success.
I have had many joyful and successful mentoring experiences. As a mentor, I believe it is very important to encourage mentees to have big questions and develop solutions for them. A mentor should have a vision in science and prepare mentees for future challenges. In my research group, diversity and inclusion are important to our mission of achieving the most excellence in research. Reflecting on my own journey, I know how important it is for mentees, especially females, immigrants, underrepresented minorities, and those with disabilities, to receive support from their mentors and surrounding environment. Therefore, as a mentor, I always ensure that my trainees are aware of their values, strength, and resilience.
Outside of my research lab, I have served as a mentor for the Global Health Research Mentoring Program at Washington University and was awarded as an outstanding mentor in 2020 for creating a supportive and equal environment for my mentees. I have also volunteered to be the official designee of my division at Washington University to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion activities.
