Personal profile

Research interests

My educational journey has been significantly shaped by my past work as a research mentor and advisor. I have had the privilege of coordinating and mentoring over 45 independent undergraduate research projects. Throughout these projects, I have guided students from the initial conceptualization of research ideas to the final presentation of their findings at various local, national, and international meetings. My specific focus has been on advising junior through PGY3 PharmD students on research topics such as the genetic characterization of copper sensing and tolerance in environmental soil fungi and the whole-genome phylogeny of environmental Rhodotorula spp. I am dedicated to integrating research and education, having co-authored articles with my mentored undergraduate trainees.

Education activities and interests

I have extensive experience as an instructor, curriculum developer, research mentor, and academic advisor at various institutions. I’ve taught diverse subjects, including Biochemistry, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, and Data Science, to undergraduate, non-majors, and professional students in PharmD and Pre-Physician Assistant programs. I’ve also designed and co-designed numerous courses, including electives in Bioinformatics, Systems Biology, and Genetics, and lab courses for Pre-Physician Assistant students. I’ve undergone multiple course redesigns to meet student and program needs.

I’m passionate about equity-centered culture change in academia and academic medicine. As a Certified Diversity Facilitator, I’ve designed and co-taught training programs, including the Facilitator Certification Program, and co-facilitated workshops on building inclusive communities. I’ve delivered substantial training at WashU Medicine, leading about 1000 person-hours per year of training for faculty and staff. I scripted, produced, and narrated a video supporting the Understanding Systemic Racism curriculum.

Mentoring

I provide comprehensive mentorship that focuses on student development, academic success, and identity exploration. I am particularly interested in establishing peer mentor networks for both trainees and mid-career preclinical faculty. My mentorship has helped students successfully transition into various graduate and professional programs, such as MD, DO, PharmD, DPM, DMD, PA, OD, and PhD programs
