We study how the stem cells of the upper gastrointestinal tract give rise to mature cell lineage. In particular, we are interested in the zymogenic (chief) cell lineage in the body of the stomach, as we think these cells are susceptible to aberrant differentiation in the setting of chronic inflammation. This aberrant differentiation (metaplasia) is a precursor for gastric cancer. We study the genetic regulation of zymogenic cell differentiation in disease and in normal gastric units and also are quite interested in how the stem cell differentiates into the zymogenic precursor cell, the mucous neck cell.
