Research interests

Research Interest: Our clinical and translational research is focused on the study of cardiac mechanics in fetal and pediatric cardiac diseases involving computational and imaging modalities at transmural and near-cellular level. We are conducting a quantitative assessment of myocardial tissue and characterize ventricular contractile properties by MRI-based measurements in children born with single ventricle to discern the long-term outcome after reconstructive staged palliation. We evaluated myocardial deformation by two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (2DSE) in a large pediatric cohort to discern the relative influence of aging and cardiac growth on ventricular contractile function. We propose to study cardiac morphologic phenotype in offspring of T2DM pregnancies at mid-trimester gestation and during infancy by the measurements of myocardial deformation and ultrasonic backscatter properties in humans to identify consequence of the adverse intrauterine environment associated with maternal T2DM. Currently we are studying adolescents with No-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease/Metabolic Syndrome to evaluate intramyocellular lipid content, myocardial structure and function to discern the phenotypic manifestation and possible mechanistic pathway of cardiovascular involvement in this subpopulation of children
